NOT AS WHITE
This picture is being submitted as part of a 52 week challenge I am following on Facebook, theme ‘White’.
The first thing which I noticed as a child, while visiting Taj Mahal, was the sheer whiteness of it. I’d never seen so spotless and pristine white marble before that.
Now, however, it’s a different story. Its no longer as white as it used to be. Air pollution and acid rains have got to it. Much of the blame has been put on an oil refinery in a nearby city. Marble by itself is a very porous stone, however for a monument which was completed in 1653 AD to have lost its whiteness appreciably in the last 20 years or so is disturbing.
Taj Mahal also features in the seven wonders of the world. It is uncertain what shall remain of its beauty for our next generation.
